Tips on Preplanning Your Yard’s Cedar Hedge

Now is a great time to preplan what kind of hedge you want while you are getting ready for spring. There are plenty of things to think about, and in today’s blog article we will give you some tips to help with your preplanning.

Where

Think about where exactly you want your hedge. Remember that hedges grow and get big. So, for example, it is not a good idea to put one right next to the house. It is a good rule of thumb not to have any plantings touching the house because it is a vector for pests to get into the house. While you will be able to prune your hedge to your liking, hedges do have a natural spread or width.

Density

How close do you want them. This will depend on what you choose as your hedge. Western Red Cedar (Thuja plicata) are naturally larger and wider than Emerald cedars (Thuja occidentalis “Smaragd”). If you are in a hurry for a thick hedge, then plant them closer. If you are mindful of budget, then plant them further apart. Everything grows fast on the Lower Mainland, so yours will fill it quickly no matter what size you plant.

Initial Size

Larger ones give you a quicker head start, but smaller ones are less expensive and will catch up. What does your budget allow for? Smaller ones are easier to manhandle and plant. But we plant large ones every day of the week.

Variety

Look at the different varieties available. Perhaps one appeals to you more than others. They will all give you privacy, respite from the wind, and shelter for wildlife.

If possible, plant in the early spring after frost is gone. They will need plenty of water the first year, so it is a kindness to plant them when there is still a lot of rain. Look on your calendar, and then talk to us at Pacific West Cedars. This is our area of expertise.
